Since becoming an Incorporated Society in March 1999, ASA membership has grown to over three hundred. Our members come from a diverse background including clinical microbiologists and infectious diseases physicians, respiratory and ICU physicians, medical and non-medical microbiologists and scientists, pharmacists, veterinarians, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and industry representatives from pharmaceutical and diagnostic/research biomedical companies. ASA provides a unique opportunity for all these individuals to interact. Although ASA’s membership is primarily based in Australia and New Zealand, it now extends to the USA, France, Belgium, Denmark, Singapore and Japan.

Although from different backgrounds, members have a common interest – the study of antimicrobials. The Society has many aims and I trust that some or all will satisfy each individual member’s needs. These aims are:

  • To facilitate the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of antimicrobials.
  • To encourage communication and cooperation between those actively engaged in the field of antimicrobials and related disciplines.
  • To hold meetings and conferences.
  • To demonstrate publicly the need for an educated and considered approach to the use of antimicrobials.
  • To encourage research in the study of antimicrobials by grants from funds of the Society and by the establishment of scholarships and awards.

We have been able to achieve these aims by:

  • Organising an annual 3-day scientific meeting.
  • Hosting the 8th Western Pacific Congress on Chemotherapy and Infectious Diseases.
  • Organising antimicrobial susceptibility testing and pharmacodynamic workshops.
  • Actively participating by invitation in other Society’s Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Offering several scholarships and travel awards to enable our members to attend a variety of conferences
  • Meetings with various national bodies.
Supporting the Australian Sub Committee Member on CLSI (formerly NCCLS) Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Committee Meetings.
  • Producing a quarterly newsletter.
  • Maintaining the ASA website: www.asainc.net.au.
  • Becoming an affiliated member of the Western Pacific Society for Infectious Diseases and Chemotherapy.
  • Establishing the Australian chapter of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics.
